The Artificial Chemist is a fluidic robo-chemist operated with an artificial intelligence (AI)-guided decision-making agent to accelerate synthetic path discovery and synthesis science studies of emerging energy materials. The Artificial Chemist’s workflow begins by rapidly and efficiently self-learning the synthetic chemistry of solution-processed nanomaterials. Its AI ‘brain’ selects a set of learning experiments to be conducted autonomously by the fluidic robot, the results of which are then used to build its nanomaterial synthesis knowledge. The AI ‘brain’ of the Artificial Chemist then identifies the best synthetic route of the nanomaterials for the targeted optical and optoelectronic properties and autonomously tests/validates it experimentally —three orders of magnitude faster than current manual synthetic techniques. It is constructed from custom-built hardware and Ocean Insight spectrometers.
