Ben Hatton leads the Functional and Adaptive Surfaces group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at U Toronto. We are interested in the design and engineering of material surfaces for properties such as wettability, adhesion, and biological interactions. In particular, we focus on microbial contamination of biomaterials, the growth of bacterial biofilms on medical devices, and antimicrobial materials. Another major focus of our work is active, smart materials for dynamic control of surface wetting and adhesion. Finally, we also work on the design of nanoporous and cellular materials.

Research Interests

  • Microbiology and antimicrobial materials
  • Colloidal self-assembly
  • Surface nano- and microstructures to influence the surface properties of materials
  • Catalysis, biomaterials, and smart surfaces
